Shared information from the Cochrane Rotary Youth Talent Festival
"For those of you who have had students participate before, you will know that, once again, is a festival where children can perform in a safe and supportive environment with top notch adjudicators. We welcome Choirs, vocals (solos, duets, trios, groups), instrumentalists, bands, musical theatre and compositions at festival. We are thrilled to able to give out thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes. We have sent many young people to specialized camps (dance, theatre, vocal, instrumental...) and have helped many families purchase instruments (pianos, guitars, saxophones, violins, drums...) and we want to do it again! There are only 3 weeks left to register (deadline January 26) so don’t miss it! Festival will be held on Feb 2,3 and 4th, 2020, with the FINALE on Feb. 7th. Cash prizes will be given out, and Scholarship winners will be announced at FINALE. Please go to [the] website cochraneyouthtalent.ca for more information and to register! Thank you!" Hello band families!
Welcome to the New Year - I hope you had a wonderful holiday and were able to spend time together making memories. I'm excited to be back and I'm looking forward to what this next chunk of time will usher forward for our band students. As some of you may know, I attended the Midwest Clinic in Chicago at the end of December, which is a large music conference bringing people together from all over the US and Canada. I'm excited about all the PD I had the opportunity to take in and hope I can bring some fresh ideas into the classroom. *Important Note: Gr. 10-12 J-Block courses will be running this week. The next few months will be fairly busy as students take part in exams, start Semester 2, and start preparing for our next festivals and concerts. Here are some of the anticipated upcoming important dates: January:

Hello Band Parents! We had an exciting week last week with a wonderful choir performance at the Jubliee Auditorium and an energetic Jazz Band Concert on Thursday at CHS. Your children are nothing short of spectacular! Next week, Tuesday Dec 10th at 7:00pm, we’ll have our Concert Band and Choir Christmas Concert in the CHS Gymnasium. Important items included:
We are looking forward to one of our larger fundraising events of the year for the music department, the bake sale during the December 10th winter concert. In order to make this asuccess, please consider donating baked goods for the sale. The items must be clearly labelled towhat it is as well as a list of ingredients. Please ensure your items are pre-packaged into saleable amounts as we do not have the supplies to divide out the treats prior to the sale. Please bring the items to the main office on December 10th during the day. Concert Setup:
Uniforms: Most students should have their uniforms by now. If not, please have them see me during a Conn3ct block or during lunch and we’ll get things sorted out (please encourage them to see me this week if they are missing anything). Reminder that students supply their own black pants/skirt, black socks, and black shoes. Concert Logistics: We would like students to arrive no later than 6:20 in the band room in uniform. The gymnasium will be open at this point if parents/family would like to find their seats already. If students are playing in the first half of the concert, they are to get their instrument set up and begin a gentle warmup with their section. We’ll meet as a group in the band room at 6:30 to give further details to the group, then we’ll meet with all the 12th graders in the learning commons at 6:40. Students are expected to watch the other performing groups when they are not performing themselves. We will have reserved seats in the back of the gymnasium for these students. Please don’t hesitate to ask myself or Mr. Talen if you have any questions or if anything is unclear. Regards, Ms. Hazelwanter Good afternoon music families,

Concerts We’re staring concert season in the face at the moment, here’s some information that might prove helpful!
Hello,
We have decided to cancel our performance at the Pumpkin Lantern Festival this year. Tricky decision, but we’re sticking to it. With the wind, it would have knocked our stands over and sent music everywhere. The rain would not have been great for certain instruments. With the unknown of whether or not (pun intended) if would have cleared up, we chose to cancel. We will be sure to have a performance in the next week or two (Playing in the snake pit to welcome students into school on their rehearsal day, creating an impromptu performance for students/parents during a Conn3ct block, etc). Thank you for understanding. Please spread the word – and if possible, send me a quick response so that I can be sure you received the message. Thank you, Ms. Hazelwanter & Mr. Talen Hello Jazz Band Parents/Students,
Tomorrow (Friday) is the Pumpkin Lantern Festival at the historic Cochrane Ranche Site. Below is the itinerary for the evening: Timeline for Oct 25th:
Thank you - I'm excited about this performance! Ms. Hazelwanter & Mr. Talen It's springtime - hundreds of Crows set out on their yearly migration and converge at the Gathering Tree. This sacred Gathering is an opportunity for the six crow Clans of the Family Kinaar to assemble, to make decisions and to celebrate being together.
But when young blood is lost, sacred laws are tested as an illegal Mob seeks revenge, and a division threatens the unity of the flock. The family's situation is made yet more precarious when a severe blizzard hits and the Crows are faced with the dilemma of where to find shelter. Breaking age-old decrees and working together may offer their only chance of survival ... Here is a startling view of the world from a birds-eye perspective, complete with its own set of beliefs, mythologies and politics. But it's a world familiar to us too - where the needs of the individual often clash with those of the group, and where the desire to be free must be tempered with the need to be safe, to survive. |
